Body of Missing Washington Woman Found in Smith River

By admin - Posted on 27 June 2011

The search for a missing Washington woman that began May 16th ended today when the body of 68 year old Mary Patricia Plochowietz of Yakima Washington, was located and removed from the Smith River. Floaters spotted what they believed were waders lodged in a root ball on friday and reported it to FWP personnel at the Eden Bridge take out in Cascade County.

Meagher County Sheriff Jon Lopp flew the area and was able to confirm the sighting was a body. A joint recovery mission was then organized by the Meagher County Sheriff’s Office and Cascade County Sheriff’s Office. Today through a joint effort, members of the Meagher County Sheriff’s Office, Meagher County Search & Rescue, Bill Galt Aviation, Cascade County Sheriff’s Office, the Cascade County Swift Water Rescue Team and Fish Wildlife and Parks were able to navigate by air and water and recover the body from the Smith River.

The families of the missing woman have been notified and though the outcome is tragic, Sheriff Lopp is glad to be able to provide the family with some closure. The effort could not have been completed without the many people involved from beginning to end in both the search and recovery.

Sheriff Lopp especially appreciates the many hours put in by his Officers, Bill Galt Aviation, Meagher County Search and Rescue, Fish Wildlife and Parks, Lewis & Clark County’s Search & Rescue, Cascade County Sheriff’s Office, Cascade County’s Swift Water Rescue, Malmstrom Air Force Base, and the Dept. of Homeland Security.
