Boil Order for White Sulphur Springs

By admin - Posted on 06 June 2012

The City of White Sulphur Springs drinking water may be contaminated due to damage to the sand filter.

What Contaminants are present? Contaminants are likely bacteria which may be present in the drinking water due to contamination from damage to the drinking water storage tank from debris entering the tank through the damaged roof.

What Should I do? Do Not Drink the Water Without Boiling it First or use Bottled Water. Bring all water to a rolling boil, let it boil for 3 to 5 minutes and let it cool before using. Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, and preparing food until further notice.

What are the Symptoms of Illness Caused by These Organisms? Microbes in drinking water can cause diarrhea, nausea or other digestive symptoms. They may pose a special health risk for infants, young children, some of the elderly, and people with severly compromised immune systems.

The symptoms above are not caused only by organisms in drinking water. If you experience any of these symptoms and they persist, you may want to seek medical advice. People at increased risk should seek advice from their health care providers about drinking water.

What Happened? What is being done? The water distribution storage tank was contaminated with debris from a suspected tornado destroying the roof of the tank and the slow sand filter building. The debris has fallen in the tank and contaminated the water. The town is running on wells and keeping the storage tank on line to avoid breaking lines in the distribution piping. We are working with the public health department to investigate/resolve this issue. We are currently increasing the chlorination levels at the wells as well. Therefore, your water may have a stronger chlorine smell than usual. In addition, we are evaluating all available information and conducting tests to confirm the extent of the contamination of the system. We will inform you when tests show no bacteria and when you no longer need to boil your water. We do not anticipate resolving the problem immediately and ask for your patience. The city will keep you updated on the situation and when it might be resolved.. The boil water order will remain in effect until all contamination is removed from the tank and the roof is repaired to keep any contamination from entering the drinking water.
