Lost Persons Found on Maudlow Road

By admin - Posted on 14 March 2014

On March 13, 2014 at approximately 1:30pm, the Meagher County Sheriff's Office (MCSO) Dispatcher received a cellphone call. The caller stated that her and a friend were lost somewhere on Maudlow Road. The caller went on to say that her and a friend had went for a drive the previous evening and had gotten stuck in the snow on Maudlow road. They spent the night in the pickup. When it got light in the morning they started walking. They thought they were closer to Ringling than they were to Maudlow so they started walking north. The caller stated she was wearing a light coat, jeans and tennis shoes and was very cold. They had not eaten since the previous afternoon. Meager County Search and Rescue (MCSAR) was activated.

Gallatin County was notified of the incident as a large portion of the Maudlow Road is in Gallatin County. It was discovered that Gallatin County had been searching for the individuals since the night before but did not know where to look as they had not told anyone where they were going. Gallatin County SAR was also short handed as they had a SAR operation for an avalanche going on.

The lost persons were found at approximately 3:10pm. They were transported to the Mountain View Medical Center for a checkup. They were released that evening, with no injuries.

The MCSAR personnel returned to search for two other people who had gotten lost searching for the original lost couple. They were found in short order. They had also gotten stuck in the snow. The MCSAR members helped them get unstuck and they turned around and headed home.

It is important to remember to tell someone where you are going and when you will be back, even if you are just going for a short drive. It is very easy to get stuck this time of year. Always carry extra clothing, shovels and other supplies when venturing into the woods.
